"Wow!" Check These Stunning Visuals with Wood Floor Care!

Jim Pemberton - Cleaning & Restoration Learning Center

Have you watched any of the “home improvement” shows that are popular with TV viewers?

If you have, you likely have noticed how often carpet is removed as a part of making a home more appealing to the buyer.  While current style choices (as well as increasing dog ownership), are driving this trend, another reason is simply the beauty of finished wood:

A hardwood floor that glows is often breathtaking.  I have seen this in my own experience with one of my rental properties.  As soon as a prospective tenant sees the warm glow of the hardwood floor in the dining area, they are ready to sign the lease.

I learned this once again just recently:

I had the opportunity to train a company that has grown from a carpet and upholstery cleaning company to one that now also offers area rug and hard surface floor care. The owner of the company had asked for some help in learning wood floor cleaning, as the demand for that service was increasing in their area.

An opportunity had arisen that offered an ideal venue to do true hands on training.  A customer of theirs was selling a house, which had hardwood floors in the entry hallway, and the dining room. Both floors were in good shape, and while soiled, did not require sanding.

The carpet in the home cleaned nicely, but the visual effect of walking into the home with dull wood floors created a negative first impression.  It was decided that cleaning and applying a preservation finish would be helpful.

These were the steps taken to restore the floor:

#1 - Testing and Inspection:

The floor was in very good condition, and the original finish of the wood was intact.  Just as importantly, testing showed that there had been no wax finish applied in the past, nor had it been cleaned with oil based materials.  These tests are critical to ensure that the final finish bonds properly.

#2 - Cleaning:

The floor was cleaned with a two step process that removed a significant amount of soil and also prepared the floor to accept the finish.

#3 - Finish Application:

Two coats of finish were applied, which gave the floor a bright, shiny finish that is perfect for the “first impression” for a home buyer.
