Three Reasons Your Customer will Pay Well For Pet Friendly Odor Treatments

by Jim Pemberton - eCleanAdvisor Essential Services Coach

A while back, I had an interesting conversation with a customer of a carpet cleaner who I know. His customer contacted me to ask about buying deodorizer for urine odor. It seems that this cleaner had cleaned her carpet to her satisfaction but wasn't able to totally remove the urine odor. The consumer, who actually likes the cleaner and how well he cleaned her carpet and duct work, was frustrated and just wanted to solve the odor problem.

Between the cost of the product plus the rental cost for the cleaning machine that she needed to properly treat her carpet, she spent nearly $75.00 for that one area of carpet in the room that needed to be treated. When I asked her if she was doing this to save money instead of paying a professional, her answer amazed me:

Three Reasons Your Customer will Pay Well For Pet Friendly Odor Treatments

“I would have gladly paid $100.00 more to get the smell out of that room. It's just that his men seemed in such a hurry and I felt I just needed to be happy that they made my carpet look so good”

She later said she'd still have him come back when the carpet needed to be cleaned again. She just felt she'd have to take care of the odor herself from now on. She complained that her poodle kept “going on my $7,000.00 carpet”, but also said she'd never get rid of the dog, because her daughter loved the dog so much. She just accepted that she would need to keep hiring the cleaner (who she liked and trusted), but would have to keep taking care of the odor herself, no matter the cost.

What should this story mean to you?

#1. Your Customer Doesn't Necessarily see "Cleaning" and "Odor Treatment" as the "Same Thing"!
Some customers may have unrealistic expectations and may expect a cleaning job to remove all odor at no extra cost. If you are doing your part in educational marketing, you should be able to overcome this issue; and you'll then find more and more people understand and recognize that these are two distinct and equally important services.

#2. Your Customer Will Pay More For Odor Treatment Than Cleaning!
Pets are more and more a part of most people's lives today. A carpet may look clean longer than it will smell good, and people will pay accordingly.

3. Your Customer Doesn't Need Mislabeled "Guaranteed" Odor Removal!
They need an "on going Odor Treatment Process". No one can guarantee that pet odor will not come back as long as the pet remains in the home, and very, VERY few people will find another home for a beloved pet, no matter the costs involved.

Summary:
You must not see pet odor treatment as an “add on sale” that you charge a few pennies per square foot extra for providing. This service is instead a “stand alone service”, just as upholstery cleaning, area rug cleaning, or air duct cleaning. The services requires special tools, products, plus process training, and is arguably even more important than cleaning alone to your customer.

Remember this:
Cleaning removes visible soil, which your customer can adapt to over time, and their “company” can overlook. Your Pet Friendly Odor Treatment  eliminates a constant reminder of uncleanliness that is noticed all of the time, and that “company/guests” will be immediately aware of the moment they enter the home.

This level of embarrassment and discomfort will be readily paid for as your customer balances their love for their pet's companionship with their need to feel socially acceptable.
