"The Most Important Stain Removal Tip"
When dealing with stains on fine fabrics, there are several choices in stain removal products and procedures.
The most important one has absolutely nothing to do
with chemistry or application techniques !
This Tip Is "LISTENING"!
In this picture, you will note that the fabric (cotton) has extensive staining from wine. You will also see some areas that are bleached pure white. The bleached areas are the result of a prior spotting attempt by this same cleaner on a previous spill. At that time, he used a highly concentrated peroxide based stain remover, which bleached out the fabric as the stain came out, but left no further damage.
While, (fortunately for him) the customer accepted that outcome, he did not want to have the same thing happen again when it came to removing the new stain.
Here is what the cleaner did:
1. Pre-qualification and Communication:
He talked to the customer about the issue, and established that she would rather have "a little staining left" than have the fabric bleached pure white.
2. Cleaning:
Wine tends to release from natural fibers when cleaned with acid based detergents, so he did that first. More than half of the staining came out simply by cleaning alone.
3. Tannin stain treatment:
Next he decided to use a tannin spotter used for coffee, tea, and other organic stains, such as wine. This removed half again as much of the wine, but the stain was still evident. He then cleaned the area to remove the tannin spotting agent.
4. Mild peroxide application:
This rarely over whitens or weakens fabric, so he applied the milder peroxide, allowed it to work overnight, and then applied it once again the next day.
The Result:
The Lesson Learned:
The cleaner's (and his customer's) only regret was that he didn't try this procedure on the previous stain. Had he showed the same patience, and most importantly, had he talked more to the customer about what she felt would be an acceptable outcome, she would have had a better looking piece of upholstery. (Also, had she been a less understanding customer, his previous efforts could have resulted in a claim.)
