Pigs in Your Customers' Homes?
The explosion of pet ownership has created interest in pets that are outside the “norm” of cats and dogs. One such unusual pet are pigs!
Why do our customers have an interest in having these creatures in their homes?
The reasons might surprise you:
According to experts in the field, pigs are playful, friendly, sensitive, and highly intelligent. They are considered by many to be more intelligent than dogs. They are also considered to be cleaner than dogs, (given the opportunity).
The term “given the opportunity” is the key phrase here!
Depending on the attentiveness and commitment of the owner, pigs can be trained to use a litterbox, or to relieve themselves outside. Where problems arise is when a 100-200# creature uses a litterbox, frequent changes are critical, and “misses and accidents” common. If a pig does urinate onto carpet, rugs, or upholstery, the volume of the urine can be very difficult to remove as well.
1. Find the source:
Use all available inspection tools (UV light, moisture detector, as well as your eyes and nose to locate the problem.
2. Understand the scope:
Large volumes of urine will be present, and the use of a subsurface extraction tool will be mandatory, not optional!
3. Set Realistic Expectations:
Discuss odor treatment, not odor removal. The presence of an animal of human weight and human urine volume prevents any assurance that complete and on going odor removal is practical. Getting odors down to a level the pet owner will accept should be your goal.
4. Always discuss everything regarding the pet's presence in the home with tact and understanding:
People who take the step to own such a pet will naturally be defensive of their choice. No judgment or humor should be expressed at all!
The world that we live in continues to be a lonely and frightening one; one in which your customers will continue to reach for the companionship of pets, even at times unusual ones.
Your job as a cleaning professional is to have a service that helps your customer maintain and nurture that loving environment, and return allows you to maintain a fair profit in your business while you earn customers for life.
