Pet Odors - Your Ticket To Higher Profits! . . . Are You Up To It?

by Jim Pemberton - eCleanAdvisor Essential Services Coach

Pets in the home have long provide
d good sources of income to savvy cleaning professionals who are willing and able to deal with the complexities of pet odor control as well as customer expectations.

The last few decades have seen an explosion in pet ownership, and with that, an incredible change in how humans relate to pets, especially dogs and cats. Pets are now seen as equal family members!
Whether or not you agree with this new relationship (and if you don't, you are in a shrinking minority in our society), this continued role that pets play in the home today will only skyrocket in the years to come.

The Opportunity:
Pet related cleaning services can no longer be considered simply “urine odor removal”. While the pungent smell of urine odor is often the one that prompts many such calls, there are other pet related services that are equally, if not more important to your customer who wants to live in a “Pet Friendly, Clean Home Environment”

Pet Loving Customer's Problem:

Pets in the home substantially increase the soil and odor load in the home because of oils, dander, hair and fur in addition to body discharge odor & stains. This additional pet related contamination, while not the cause for immediate distress that urine odor can create, also becomes a source of discomfort or embarrassment to your customer.

This resulting odor is often referred to as a “doggie odor”, which is usually not noticed immediately by the occupants. Professional cleaners often become involved with this problem when the home has this odor amplified because of increased bacterial activity in the carpet which is accelerated by moisture in the carpet and increased humidity in the home environment.
The Solution To Their Problem:

1. Eliminate the Sources:
The first, and most critical, step in eliminating any odor is to remove the source of the odor. In the case of urine and other body discharges, thorough extraction with a sub surface extraction tool is critical. In the worst cases, the entire carpet cushion needs to be removed for source removal.

In the case of the "animal smell" or "doggie odor" issue, animal hair, fur, and dander are the main source of the odor. These materials are the breeding ground for the odors your customer finds objectionable and embarrassing. To eliminate or at least reduce this problem, your first step MUST be to thoroughly brush and vacuum the carpet, rug, or upholstery. No subsequent application of odor treatments will be able to work without this critical step!

NOTE: Vacuuming alone is ineffective! Entangled hair MUST be removed by deep brushing, preferably with a mechanical device.

2. Treat the Odor:
Botanical disinfectants have proven to be the most effective on the bacteria that feed on animal hair and dander. Only use products labeled for use on carpet and upholstery, and never sell the service as “disinfection”.
This is critical because:
      (a) Soft surfaces cannot be disinfected, only “sanitized”.
      (b) Consumers are VERY wary of disinfectants today. For this problem, you are simply applying an odor treatment.

3. Clean the Carpet:
Rinse and extract the carpet thoroughly, but do NOT over wet! Use products that leave as little residue as possible, and that are people and pet friendly. Your customer will appreciate (and pay extra for) this reassurance.

4. Dry the Carpet Quickly:
Any potential residual odors arising from remaining hair and dander (there will always be some left in the carpet, no matter how diligent you try to be) will be minimized if you speed dry with fans, as well as using your customer's HVAC system to assist you.

Will Your Customers Pay for This?
Today's consumer will pay more for the removal of odor (and the related embarrassment these odors cause) than they will for removing visible soil.

For you to earn the right to charge a fair price for this service, you need -
(#1) to understand the problem,
(#2) have the tools and products needed to eliminate the problem, and
(#3) be willing to take the time to do it right!
