Mistakes to Avoid When Using Visual Storytelling
7 Common Mistakes Made in
Visual Storytelling That You Want to Avoid
Blog Post #4: (part 4 of 5)
Visual storytelling works because it resonates with people. Human are natural storytellers. We see ourselves in the story's characters and experience their emotions vicariously. But just because it's natural doesn't mean anyone can do it.
Visual storytelling often fails because of just
one these following 7 common mistakes !
**#1 – “Lack of Focus”
It has one straightforward plotline that's easy to follow and delivers one clear message.
>>> When crafting stories, it's very easy to give them unnecessary detail and overcomplicate the message!
Start planning your content by asking:
>>> What message do I want to deliver?
>>> What do I want my audience to do?
>>> Make sure each element of the story serves that final goal.
**#2 – “Losing the Plot Line”
All compelling stories have the same essential elements. If you don't understand these elements, your story may fail to create an emotional connection.
The main elements of storytelling are:
>>> the main character, (rarely you)
>>> the conflict, &
>>> the resolution.
The main character faces and overcomes the conflict, leading to the desired resolution!
Your customers struggle along with the main character, who they identify as themselves. They then understand that using your cleaning services will get them the same results.
**#3 – “You're Never the Main Character!”
Customers are far more likelier to engage with a story about their experiences, needs, and wants!
If your story is all about you, you'll fail to make this emotional connection!
While your story may discuss your company, or cleaning services, the main character ‘should always be the customer'!
For example . . .
A story highlighting the features of your cleaning services should:
>>> #1 - Present them in terms of the ‘benefits to the user'.
>>> #2 - If you're highlighting your professional story, explain how you've positively impacted the lives of customers or business associates.
**#4 – “Too Much Winning”
>>> The important plot of a good story is the struggle !!
>>> A story about success and winning won't make an emotional connection !
>>> It's the character's vulnerability that makes it relatable !!
For example, you might be afraid to show how badly you failed when starting your business. You may not want to tell your audience how much you suffered.
But this authenticity is exactly what will draw them in !
**#5 – “You're Not in Art School”
Now is not the time to show off your filmmaking skills! It's tempting to get artsy, but instead, aim for clarity.
Your story should be simple and easy to understand !
Your audience may get lost and miss the message if you get abstract.
**#6 – “Boring Visuals”
Remember that “visual storytelling” works because it's attention-grabbing and attractive.
>>> Experiment with visual elements and make your graphics interesting.
>>> You don't need a huge budget or production skills to do this.
Take advantage of the features of the content creation software you're using.
**#7 – “Perhaps You Don't Know Your Audience!”
The biggest mistake of all is not knowing your audience !!
>>> You must know their pain points, questions, issues, and challenges to tell stories that address these and present your cleaning services as the solution.
Get to know your audience, and you can create stories that appeal to them!!!
