Mattress Cleaning: The Service Your Customers Want More Than You Know!

by Jim Pemberton - eCleanAdvisor Essential Services Coach

Even before the coronavirus pandemic changed our world beyond recognition, your customers were beginning to be more aware of the need to have their belongings cleaned for health and sanitation, instead of simply because of the appearance of soil.

Mattresses are a key example of one item that your customers has more concerns about than you may realize

Few mattress pads will completely protect a mattress from the accumulation of human and pet dander, as well as the dust mites that feed upon the dander. Add to that the inevitable body discharges that occur throughout the years that the mattress is owned, and your customer will gladly pay for a thorough cleaning of their mattress.

Five Important Steps You Should Follow to Clean Mattresses:

1. Qualify:
Tactfully explain that mattresses are not stain resistant, and that there may be remaining stains after cleaning. Your customer is not likely having the mattress cleaned for visual appearance reasons, but it is important to make this clear.

2. Vacuum:
Use a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment that has true HEPA filtration. The human body sheds a few pounds of skin flakes a year, much of which gets into their mattresses. Vacuuming away those skin flakes, and the 100,000 to 10 million dust mites (according to a Ohio State University Study) that are feeding upon that skin, is of obvious importance to your customer. You cannot guarantee what percentage of either those skin flakes, or the dust mites that you'll remove, but your cleaning process should reassure them of a much cleaner environment.

3. Precondition:

Only use the most human and pet safe (pets are bed partners, make no mistake) products with which to clean mattresses. Products made from botanical sources, or that at least are free of perfumes and harsh chemicals, should be used. Botaniclean from Legend Brands is an excellent example of such a product. While the product is an EPA registered disinfectant, its label directions for textiles is limited to statements for cleaning and deodorizing, both of which it does very well.
4. Rinse:
Rinse with a low moisture upholstery tool, using only water in the rinse tank. You will not require acidic neutralizing agents if your preconditioner is of the type described above. Your goal is to leave no lingering fragrance or chemical residue in the mattress at all.

5. Dry:

Use air movers to dry the mattress thoroughly so that the customer (and their pets!) can comfortably sleep on their mattress the same evening.

Make No Mistake:
The world we live in today is one that is far different than just a few years ago. Your customer wants a clean environment, but not one full of strong smelling cleaners and disinfectants. When you can show your customer that you can contribute to an even cleaner and more sanitary home environment, they will be more than pleased to have you clean all of their belongings, including their mattresses.

SPECIAL NOTE:
"Mattress cleaning prequalifications, procedures, as well as issues of your customers' potential allergies to the materials accumulated in the mattress is an extensive subject. Call Jim Pemberton  for additional information regarding upcoming training modules on this important service.
