How to Identify Time & Money Wasters in
Your 'Specialty Service Processes'

by Lee Pemberton - eCleanAdvisor Business Coach

The very best way to make your specialty service processes more profitable is to make them more valuable to your customer! To do that, requires some basic research on your part!

First you will need to identify the most important specialty processes that are also time consuming and either bill for them or eliminate them from your service processes.

You can get rid of them in a number of ways. You can do it by tightening up, updating, outsourcing, or improving your process. However, the first step is to figure out what's consuming your available productive time and causing the money drain!.

How to Identify Time & Money Wasters in &##xa;       Your &##x27;Specialty Service Processes&##x27;
Keep it Simple:
Start by Performing a Simple Time vs Income Audit  -
You may be able to guess where you're spending the bulk of your time, but the only way to know for sure is to perform a “hard nosed” time vs income  audit. This means logging time consumed providing a set number of processes in order to gather objective data. You can do this by simply using a notepad to log your time, the processes provided and the income received. The results may very well surprise and disappoint you.

Next, Consider Time Spent vs Results Achieved & Income Return
Examine the processes where you spend the most time. Do they produce the  results and income expected? What you might find is that you're spending a great deal of time on service processes that don't produce the income results that you badly need. Meanwhile, those that could produce the greater results aren't getting the time or attention they should.

What's Stopping You from Producing Profitable Processes?
For processes that consume time and produce only marginal or no return, find out why?
There are always some situations where specialty processes are delivered  that take longer than they should as well as not being billed. Look for bottlenecks where tasks get caught up and are not billed. If the actual work to complete a certain task simply takes too long, you should definitely consider improving, outsourcing or eliminating such unprofitable service processes.

Determine The Most Common Time & Profit Wasters:
What kinds of processes tend to waste the most time (and profits) in your business?

Following are some ideas to get you started on what you should look for:

Specialty Service Processes that require specific tools and expertise.
These are things most service tech's with the proper training can do. However, the value is often not appreciated and either under priced or not charged at all.

Routine processes done regularly without establishing their value.
If you can do them without thinking about their value, others can as well. Carefully examine service processes you deliver each day without establishing their special value. Urine & doggie odors come to mind.

Tech tasks that can be automated.
If there's anything you're doing that the consumer could do with their equipment, yours need to be automated.
Example: special vacuums, special sprayers, special inspection tools, etc

SUMMARY:

If you take the time now to organize your basic business and production practices, you can save a great deal of time and money later on. Map out each business or service process and see where time is being wasted or not billed for. Then, you can figure out how to tighten up and make the most of every ones productive service processes on their jobs.
