Spike In Complaints Regarding Carpets Resoiling!

by Jim Pemberton - Pembertons Learning Center

Years of a sluggish economy has contributed to a spike in
complaints regarding carpets resoiling after cleaning or
looking even looking worse after cleaning than before!

A large number of carpet owners, residential as well as
commercial & institutional have cut back on their
maintenance of carpeted flooring in order to cut expenses.

Unfortunately, at the same time the level of usage dropped very
little, allowing the level of soiling to increase exponentially!

        -------------------------------

Case Study Of A Warranty Complaint:

THE PROBLEM -

Well maintained carpet only 5 years old showing no improvement
after cleaning, and beginning to look worse after cleaning than
prior to the cleaning!

Careful, thorough inspection revealed the following facts:

* The floor covering is a beige olefin level loop carpet,
installed in the office areas of an industrial environment.

* The traffic areas were dark brown to black, in striking
contrast to the nearly original light beige colors along the
  walls & in non-traffic areas.

* The carpet is only five years old, and has been professionally
cleaned monthly, as well as vacuumed nightly since its
  installation.

* The monthly cleaning method used was hot water extraction with
a heated, high performance portable carpet cleaning unit.

* The cleaning agents were high quality products that meet the
most stringent carpet & fiber producer specifications; (so the
cleaning agents did not appear to be at fault).

* Each month the carpet had been hot water extracted, but
regardless of the efforts expended, little improvement was
evident, and the condition gradually worsened. Finally the
the carpet began to look even worse after cleaning than it had
  prior to cleaning!

* This carpet is probably a wrong choice, (too light colored for
the nature of the environment); plus inspection also revealed
that the walk off mats being used were inadequate.

        -------------------------------
THE SOLUTION:
Improved maintenance techniques combined with improved tools
& cleaning chemistry!
        -------------------------------

In this case, carpet appearance restoration was achieved using
the following process:

#1 - Dry soil extraction using a two motor commercial pile
       brush vacuum unit.

#2 - Encapsulation chemistry using a quality encapsulation
       cleaner according to label directions.

#3 - Application of an encapsulant using a "Cimex" unit
equipped with "tan carpet quality floor pads".

The results were remarkable. Dry soil extraction (pile lifting)
alone improved the carpets overall appearance more than the
standard vacuuming, preconditioning, and hot water extraction
had been able to do.

When followed by the encapsulation process, the traffic areas
responded dramatically. While visual analysis is subjective,
there was easily an 80%+ improvement. Observers commented that
the carpet hadn't looked so good since the first few months after
the installation. In addition, production time was cut
significantly, and in areas where the encapsulation cleaning
started, we observed that the carpet was nearly dry at departure.

SUMMARY CONCLUSION:

The combination of commercial quality dry soil extraction
combined with the commercial quality encapsulation process can
dramatically increase the day to day appearance of even heavily
used commercial carpeting.
