The "OTHER" Pet Odor!
Are You Able To Solve This Problem for Your Customers?

by Jim Pemberton - eCleanAdvisor Essential Services Coach

Being a Clean Environment and Odor Control Specialist or 'Authority' means that you are expected to understand all odors and sources, not just urine.

Springtime accelerates  warm days and humid weather, and with that warmth and humidity, unpleasant odors in carpet and upholstery become increasingly more noticeable. Your job, as the Odor Control Specialist, is to make a recommendation or offer a solution!

The most common odor that cleaners are called upon to treat is pet urine odor. Often, however, when a cleaner is called upon to treat such an odor, what they detect isn't urine at all, but instead an odor we cleaners call “doggie odor”.

The OTHER Pet Odor&##x21; &##xd;&##xa;Are You Able To Solve This Problem for Your Customers&##x3f;
“Doggie odor” is the smell that comes from decaying pet hair and dander (cats as well as dogs) that accumulates deep in carpet, rug or upholstery yarns. This hair is never completely removed by the consumers vacuuming, and as bacteria begins decomposition of the hair, the resulting odor is one that is said to smell like “dirty socks” or “an old mop”.
In fact, it is not uncommon for cleaners to amplify these odors during the professional cleaning process to the extent that it becomes a post cleaning complaint.

The importance of this distinction between urine odor and “doggie odor” is that the treatment for each is different.

The application of water based deodorants, including enzyme products in the large volume necessary to neutralize urine residues, may increase the bacterial activity that creates the “doggie smell”.

The most effective treatment in removing “doggie smell” is to treat  the carpet, rugs or upholstery with a  botanical odor treatment before and after cleaning. Botanical odor treatments are labeled and sold as botanical disinfectants for hard surfaces, but are classified as sanitizers or simply deodorizers when used on textiles.

The best procedure to follow when you've determined that a carpet is contaminated by “doggie smell” and not urine, is as follows:

The OTHER Pet Odor&##x21; &##xd;&##xa;Are You Able To Solve This Problem for Your Customers&##x3f;
     #1. Groom and vacuum the carpet thoroughly.

The more animal hair you can remove using a counter rotating brush machine (“CRB” for short) the better.  At a minimum, use a carpet-groomer with vigorous back and forth action.  After removing as much hair as possible with either of these tools, vacuum the carpet thoroughly. The more hair and dander you remove from the carpet now,  the less organic material will remain to support future bacterial activity

  #2.  Apply botanical odor treatment to the carpet, and groom it in, or better yet, agitate with your “CRB”.  If the carpet is not heavily soiled, this will also act as a preconditioning step.

  #3.  Clean the carpet.

  #4.  For severe contamination apply botanical odor treatment and groom it into the carpet. Excess moisture should be removed by using your extraction tool, but without additional rinsing.

  #5. Speed Dry. The faster the carpet dries, the less odor that will remain.

 Despite the fact that your botanical odor treatment is an EPA registered disinfectant, be very clear to state that you are not “disinfecting” the carpet.

 SUMMARY:

  This “Pet Fresh” service is over and beyond a standard cleaning job.
You will be taking extra steps to provide a fresh, clean, and pleasant home environment, and should be paid for the additional time and steps involved.

  Remember This:  Most other cleaners are making homes smell WORSE this time of year.  As the Clean Environment and Odor Control Specialist in your area, you will be setting yourself over and above such cleaners when you offer this important service as one of your cleaning packages.
