Excellent Solution That Will Boost Your Winter Business!

Jim Pemberton - Fabric Pro Upholstery Specialist

In the winter, the northern 2/3 of the US experiences cold
and wet weather that can make truck mount use messy for your customer, unpleasant for the operator, and create risks of equipment freeze ups that can be very expensive for the owner of the cleaning company.

These issues that come with the winter season have long frustrated cleaning company owners, and often cause a great deal of financial hardship.

Every winter I recall once again a conversation I had with a veteran cleaner from New Jersey. Tom said he rarely had a “bad” winter, and the reason for this was the way he positioned his upholstery cleaning service.

Tom understood that most of his upscale customers could afford his service year round, and the only reason they didn't use him much in the winter was the inconvenience of having carpet cleaned at that time, as well as the difficulty of keep their carpet clean when its “sloppy” outdoors.

What Tom did was to promote upholstery cleaning services in the winter time. This was his thought process:

#1. Customer Convenience:

He told his customers that the best time to have their upholstery cleaned was in the winter. It was good for them for the following reasons:

(a.) Unlike carpet, they didn't have to worry about slush and salt being tracked in and onto upholstery.

(b.) The dry environment created by winter heating in the home meant upholstery dried far faster, which was both convenient for them and prevented many upholstery cleaning problems related to slow drying.

(c.) Since it was his slow time, he could offer them better pricing.

#2. His Convenience:

(a.) It can be difficult to determine how long some upholstery cleaning jobs can take to complete.  Adding on upholstery cleaning during a busy carpet cleaning day sometimes creates scheduling difficulties. Having “upholstery only” cleaning days when the pace is relaxed and his schedule not demanding encouraged him to sell more upholstery cleaning, then book it for the post holiday cleaning season.

(b.) He was able to use small, lightweight portable equipment on the coldest winter days, and thus didn't worry about his equipment freezing up, dragging hoses through snow or mud, or leaving his customers doors open.

“A small, lightweight portable with a low moisture dry tool can give you excellent upholstery cleaning results without the need of your truck mount”

It might be a little late in the season to build this system up for your company, as much of Tom's secret was promoting and pre-scheduling his work throughout the year, but if you are a confident upholstery cleaning specialist you should consider this system. As Tom told me, after just a couple of years of developing this program, he never again had a “slow winter”.
