The Tale of Five Frogs on a Log - a real marketing saga!
Lee Pemberton
Q: Five frogs are on a log. Four decide to jump off.
How many are left?
A: Five, because there's a big difference between deciding and doing!
Why do so many 1-10 employee carpet or restoration business operators send
for the same marketing information packets time after time?
(They obviously have received the information before, so why keep
requesting more?)
Simple. They are like one of the frogs on the log. They "decided" to jump more than once…but never have. Meanwhile, their businesses probably need to grow, yet they are still trying to muster the courage to pull the trigger on something. Anything!
Perfection
It could be that they are perfectionists and put off a project until every
detail is in place. Typically, a perfectionist won't start a project until he's
absolutely sure it will work. And, since marketing depends on the reactions of
fickle humans and can miss the mark, the perfectionist never gets off the log!
Is it possible that you are one of this group?
Procrastination
Years ago, a wise marketer in an allied industry gave a powerful bit of advice
in an article he wrote, which I have followed many times. He used to say that a
less-than-perfect project, which is gets started, is far better than a perfect
one that never gets started.
So it's also more than likely that more than a few of 1-10 employee carpet or restoration business operators are procrastinators!
Because of the many & varied pressures on the 1-10 employee business, we all fall victim to procrastination. We all put off doing what we should do for a variety of reasons.
The key here is the two-letter word "do." It's one thing to talk about it and quite another thing to do it.
There's nothing like keeping in regular contact with your customers, and
asking for business.
Very often, I get calls from our customers who tell me that they've been
thinking about promoting their business. In some cases, they've been thinking
about promoting for years but they've never actually done anything yet.
The fact is, you can never succeed by thinking alone. You must act.
Even as you are looking for new customers, it's vitally important stay in touch
with your existing customers!
As a cleaning professional, your mission is to show people what you can do…
then ask them from time to time if they've "got any work."
First, make a plan then implement it. Don't be content to sit on the log.
