SPOT & STAIN REMOVAL - BLOOD
Scott Warrington
INTRODUCTION
Regardless of the quantity, spills of human blood are potential
health hazards. Hepatitis type B, HIV, and other pathogens
may be present. It is important to follow the procedures
outlined in the blood-borne pathogens standard. Personal
protective equipment (PPE) includes gloves and goggles.
NOTE: The following procedures apply to relatively
small quantities of blood. Trauma scene clean-up requires
additional precautions. The carpet and/or the cushion may
need to be replaced.
PROCEDURE
STEP 1:
Flush thoroughly with cool or lukewarm water. The Spot
Lifter by Water Claw is an excellent tool for this use. Place the Spot
Lifter over the stain. Apply a slow but steady stream of water around the outside of the stain using the
Spot Lifter
to pull the water through the stain and flush it.
A valve on the end of your solution hose will help control water flow.
STEP 2:
Extract affected area to remove excess moisture. Many stain removal
products will be more effective when the carpet fibers are
relatively dry.
STEP 3:
Apply Protein
Spotter to affected area.
STEP 4:
Allow 2 to 3 minutes dwell time.
STEP 5:
Rinse and extract with cool or lukewarm water.
STEP 6:
If residue remains, apply Bio-Modifier.
STEP 7:
Allow 15 minutes or longer dwell time.
STEP 8:
Rinse and extract with cool or lukewarm water.
STEP 9:
If discoloration remains, apply
Stain
Zone.
STEP 10:
Apply
Stain
Absorb as the finishing touch to prevent stains from wicking
back.
Stain
Absorb can be vacuumed away after it dries.
NOTE: Do Not Apply Hot Water To A Blood Stain!
CONCLUSION
Someone hoping to save money by salvaging blood soaked materials may
request that you clean carpet that should be disposed of.
Remember, that you are the expert. Make the proper decision
and lead the discussion to the proper outcome. Do not follow
an uninformed customer down a path that will expose you to great
liability.
IICRC S100 and various health regulations could require replace for
carpet and cushion that is saturated with blood. Trauma
scene clean-up is an interesting specialty but that service is
outside the scope of this spot removal bulletin.
