Beware of the "Under The Kitchen Sink"
Carpet Spotting Kit!
R. Doyle Bloss
I am about to tell you something that
may well shake the very foundation of your day. Hold onto
something strong. Ready? Here goes;
Your customers may occasionally
lie to you.
I know, I know. It's hard to accept. Let me help you realize what leads them to this.
Company is coming over and today of all
days, one of the kids, a careless husband, or a beloved pet
has chosen today to spill something all over the carpet.
It's never in an inconspicuous area either. They
spilled it right in the middle of the family room. Now
what does your customer do?
The conscientious carpet consumer
(that's your customer) immediately reacts to the fresh
"child, husband, or pet-caused" spill. What to use
though? What will work effectively? Everybody
from their grandmother to their realtor has a favorite "home
remedy" to deal with spots in carpeting.
The lady on
the television commercial will tell your customer if they'll just
use Resolve it will come right out. The hyped up guy
on the infomercial says if you apply Oxy-Clean, all their
problems will be solved.
If your customers are like most carpet
consumers, they have probably tried most of those ideas. And your customers have probably already realized that many
times those products did not quite work as well on the spill
on their carpet as they did on television.
The clock
is ticking. The time that their guests are arriving is
getting closer. Now what do they do?
There are a lot of cleaning chemicals
under your customer's kitchen sink. All kinds of
products that made miracle claims on the television ad. So your customer starts using any or all of them trying to
get that stain out. Now they have a real mess. The stain is still there. The carpet is full of
sticky, gummy residue. They may well have dissolved
the latex that holds the carpet together.
A week or
two later, the area where the stain is has turned to a
definitive dark black, as all of those sticky residues have
collected soil from passing shoes.
Years ago, a lab working along with a
carpet fiber producer on installed carpets with stains that
did not come out identified residue from literally hundreds
of consumer chemicals that had been used on carpeting in an
attempt to remove the spot. The kinds of things almost
everyone has under their kitchen sink, and a few that are
"dangerous" enough their storage space is usually relegated
to the garage. That investigation led to the phrase,
"the Under the Kitchen Sink Spotting Kit."
The lab
found things like turpentine, laundry and dishwashing
detergent, chlorine bleach, toilet bowl cleaner, ammoniated
hard surface floor cleaners, Liquid Plumber, disinfectant
cleaners, hand soaps, wood furniture cleaners and polishes,
and more. When people are desperate to remove a spot,
they are likely to try anything. Once the trouble is
made worse by the solutions they are putting on, they simply
try other things.
Now, they have to call you. The
spots and stains have now become extremely "unsightly."
You are left with this mess now to clean up. So you
ask your customer what they used to try and remove the spot. They get the same look on their face as your five year old
does when caught red-handed doing something they were not
supposed to do.
They wrench their brain trying to
figure out what to tell you. Why? Because they
know what they did was probably not a good idea. If
they have used your company before, they know they should
have called you. So, now your customer is left with
three basic choices. Play dumb, lie, or confess.
What do we mean by play dumb? Well, they kind of stammer and stutter for a few seconds and
then they tell you they don't know. They might even
tell you they did not put anything on the spot.
Would they lie? Yup! They tell
you they only used some product that they consider you might
consider to be "politically correct" like Resolve and every
other chemical under the kitchen sink. But they only
admit to using the "politically correct" spotter. When
you asked them if they used anything else, they tell you
no.
On a very rare occasion, they might
even tell you the whole truth and nothing but the truth. They might even admit to using the "Everything Under the
Kitchen Sink Spotting Kit." Trouble is, you are still
left with the same mess.
The key is learning how to avoid this
whole "under the kitchen sink" disaster in the first place. You could tell them to get rid of their children, husband,
or pet altogether. Then the spill might be avoided in
the first place.
But, chances are, they have grown
kind of fond of their children, husband, or pets. And
besides that, think of the time and money they already have
invested in them. The better choice is for you to
become their source of information and spotting solution
whenever something is spilled on their carpet.

Spotter comes in handy. Your local Interlink Supply

Spotter ready to go, you simply sell or give each customer
or potential customer a bottle of the spotter. You
tell them whenever and whatever might be spilled on the
carpet, use this Home Pro Spotter according to the label
directions.
If the spot does not come out, then you
make sure they understand their next step is to call you.
"Step away from the kitchen sink and do not open that
cabinet underneath." There are just too many
things under there that do not work, and even worse can be
dangerous to the carpet.
The good news is that you have
encouraged your customers to tell you the truth and released
them from their "throngs of guilt" related to telling you
lies.
The even better news is that once you have done
this with your clients and potential clients, you will have
cemented their loyalty and appreciation toward you.
And finally, the great news is that you will have to clean
up less spots that have been treated with everything under
the kitchen sink.
