SPOTTING - WINTER DAMAGE FROM SNOW & ICE MELTING PRODUCTS

INTRODUCTION

In some climates, carpet that looks powdery white from tracked in de-icer is as normal a part of every winter as the snow and cold.

Products used to melt ice and snow are salts.  They include potassium chloride, magnesium chloride, sodium chloride and urea.  They are highly hygroscopic, that is they attract moisture from the air.  This moisture serves to attract additional soils as people walk across damp entryways.

Newer acetate ice melting chemicals are more environmentally friendly to plant life.  They are also easier to remove from carpeting.

PROCEDURE

Quick Guide

PROCEDURE

  1. Prevention is key.

  2. Vacuum thoroughly.

  3. Extract using Fab Set

  4. Hot Water Extraction clean using Zone Perfect and End Zone.

  5. Bonnet clean carpet with Fab Set.

  6. Speed dry carpet.

PRODUCTS NEEDED

STEP 1

Prevention should include use of track-off mats that are changed on a regular basis.

If you have a voice in these matters, select a product that is not as difficult to remove.  You may be able to reduce the very common overuse of products for melting ice and and snow.

STEP 2

Increase cleaning frequency when weather conditions call for ice melting products to be used.  A heavy build up can be difficult to remove.

STEP 3

Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum.  A pile lifter will be beneficial, especially if fibers are matted down.

STEP 4

Extract using Fab Set, diluted at 6 ounces per gallon of water.  This will neutralize and dissolve chloride products.  Keep water pressure and water volume low.  Make several dry passes.  Too much water will dissolve and spread residue.

STEP 5

Clean using Zone Perfect as your pre-spray and End Zone in your rinse.

STEP 6

Bonnet clean the affected areas using micro fiber or cotton bonnets. Bonnets should be dampened with Fab Set.

STEP 7

Dry the carpet using an Air King or other air mover.

CONCLUSION

Winter is normally a slow time for carpet cleaners located in cold climates.  However, your commercial clients may need increased service to remove snow and ice-melter.  Rather than wait for them to complain about this problem, take the pre-emptive step of informing them of the solutions you can offer in advance.  In addition to increased cleaning frequency, you can offer sale and/or cleaning of entry mats.  You may even be able to guide them in selecting a product that will be less troublesome.  Don't overlook residential clients who may be suffering the same troubles.  When work slows down, you could even feature a cleaning promotion to remove ice and snow melt and clean tracked in soil from traffic areas for a minimum charge.
